Why Children Need to Be Loved (Forthcoming in Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy)

(1) Children, as human beings, have rights to the primary essential conditions for a good life. (By ‘primary essential conditions,’ I mean certain goods, capacities and options that human beings need whatever else they might need in order to be adequately functioning individuals who can pursue a good life – for brevity, I shall drop the clause ‘who can pursue the good life.’ (2) Being loved as children is a primary essential condition for a good life. (That is, children need to be loved in order to be adequate functioning individuals). (3) Therefore, children have a right to be loved.
